The Manual of Style is an extension of the Wiki Rules & Policies, which every contributor and editor must follow, including staff. This is to maintain consistency across the Wiki, and to keep it accurate and formal. Moderation action against users who do not adhere to the Manual of Style is uncommon, however, it is highly recommended to do so in order to ensure that the Wiki is as accurate and reliable as it can be.

Contributors with questions regarding the Manual of Style, or who need help formatting Wikitext and/or CSS properties are strongly recommended to ask a Wiki staff member on the Northwind Wiki Discord, or a Wiki Administrator on their profile Message Wall.

It is recommended to use the Source Editor rather than Visual Editor, as the Visual Editor does not sufficiently provide the ability to manipulate the contents of a page fully unlike the Source Editor. The use of the Visual Editor should only extend to the insertion and temporary input of values for an infobox. The Source Editor can be set as your default editor by going here and selecting "Source editor" as the preferred editor.

Notices

Notices are applied to the top of the page to quickly categorize them according to needs. They include:

 • NeedsGrammar: The page has poor grammar/requires a review of formatting and/or grammar.
 • NeedsImage: The page requires an image for its infobox.
 • NeedsStatistics: The page requires statistics.
 • NeedsReview: The page has been submitted for final approval by a Wiki Administrator.
 • VerifiedStatistics: The page's statistics have been verified and are deemed accurate.

Notices should be placed on their own line, above infoboxes and the remainder of the page.

ThisisaNotice

This is the remainder of the page.

Infoboxes

Infoboxes are used on the Wiki, as with most other wikis, to organize and allow easy and quick access to information. Content inputted into an infobox should not be written upon the article page. There are several types of infoboxes, and the contents and inputs of each can vary greatly.

To add an infobox:

 • Enter the Source Editor
 • Click the top of the page
This is the top of the page.
This is the rest of the page.
 • Enter double curled brackets around the name of the infobox you want to add.
Infobox
This is the rest of the page.

See all infobox templates here. Examples on how to use each infobox can be found on each page.

Style

 • For Aid, Ammunition, Clothing, Equipment, FoodIngredient, Melee, Munition, and Tool infoboxes, the image provided should be the default item as it appears in a crafting menu, in a merchant's shop menu, in the reputation/contract rewards menu, or in the player's inventory, with the image borders being those of the borders of the item's viewframe.
 • For Building, Crafting Station, Effect, and NPC infoboxes, the image provided must be a 1:1 square aspect ratio.
 • For Faction, Geography, Guild, Island, Location, Profession, and Settlement infoboxes, the image can be any aspect ratio that has more width than height to prevent blank space in the infobox.
 • When writing a statistic in an infobox, never write filler text ("Unknown", "N/A", etc). Put in a citation asking for the statistic.

Most infoboxes for items feature a universal format which contains the following:

image=An image of the item.
caption=A caption describing the image and location/interface.
description=The ingame description of the item.
space=How much space the item takes up.
contractitem=Whether or not this item is part of a contract for a contractor. If yes, write "Yes". If not, leave blank.

crafting=The profession, materials, and crafting station neessary to craft the item.
crafttime=How long it takes to craft the item, in seconds or minutes.
experience=How much experience is gained from crafting the item.

basevalue=The base value of the item.
sellvalue=The sell value of the item.
sellable=Whether or not the item can be sold to merchants.
merchants=The type of merchants that can buy or sell the item.

Infoboxes are generally the only part of an article where violating the style of numbers is permitted for purposes of brevity.

Headings

The Northwind Wiki uses the basic MediaWiki headers. Headings can be inserted by using equal signs (=) around text, or using HTML heading code:

=Heading 1= <h1>Heading 1</h1>
==Heading 2== <h2>Heading 2</h2>
===Heading 3=== <h3>Heading 3</h3>
====Heading 4==== <h4>Heading 4</h4>

It is not advised to combine regular and HTML text headers for purposes of organizing code on a page, which helps to benefit other fellow editors.

Style

 • Do not overcomplicate heading names. Keep them short and simple. Keep headings consistent with the headings of pages in the same category.
 • Acceptable headings include those for "Trivia" and "Gallery" sections. Do not write a 'Summary' or 'Overview' heading for general page information.
 • For short pages (stub articles), do not add any headings; this compacts the contents of the page unnecessarily and needlessly.

Text

Text is the most important factor in any page, making up the bulk and serving the function of being the most informative element of the page. When writing text for an article, at minimum, it should adhere to American English grammatical standards, and should be organized into paragraphs and sections by relevant content. You are allowed to break from American English if the subject text is spelled differently ingame (i.e. torquise instead of turqoise, grey instead of gray, etc).

As Northwind is the title of a game, all instances of the text should be italicized. The Northwind title should never be stylized (NORTHWIND) when written in an article.

Refer to Contributing to the Wiki for further information.

Style

 • Information should only be included if confirmed by a Northwind staff member or developer, if the information is readily verifiable by going ingame, or if the information is historically or realistically accurate or reasonable.
 • The page should be written in regular grammatical format, that is, as if you were writing the text as a regular sentence. Any links inserted into the text should be formatted to maintain this consistency.
 • Bold the name and alternative name of the subject page, including an acronym applied to the name if necessary.
 • When writing about a subject that can be acronymized, refer to the subject by its full name first before freely referring to it as an acronym in all other instances. If starting a new section or paragraph, repeat this.
 • Provide links to another page only on the first occurrence of that page subject. If the text refers to an aspect of that page, you can link to that section.
 • Numbers below 10 should be written out as a word (one, two, three, first, second, third, etc.). Numbers 10 and above should be written out as a number (10, 11, 12, 10th, 11th, 12, etc.).
 • Never use first (I/we) or second person (you) when conveying information to the reader; instead, use "the player" or "one" to describe a hypothetical person, and to make the article appear objective and nonpartisan.
 • Never insert subjective comments, opinions, statements, etc. that can be misconstrued as actual information. If making statements about something subjective, such as an NPC's behavior or demeanor, such statements should be written to be as objective and unbiased as possible.
 • Trivia should be sparsely included on pages, as it tends to be informal; any trivia posted should be able to be backed up by ingame/staff confirmation or by historical context.

Categories

Categories are typically the last element of a page that a contributor can add before publishing a page or finalizing page edits. Pages are assigned a system of categories based on the level of importance of each category, with the most important being placed before all others. Pages with multiple categories, such as for NPCs, will require further consideration on categorical priority than pages with two or three, such as for geography.

Style

 • Categories which include a multitude of categories and pages should be written first.

 • Categories within that primary category which are considered a priority, and/or which are a direct secondary subcategory of that category, will be written second.
