Building is a mechanic that allows players to construct crafting stations and buildings to create and decorate houses and faction forts. It was formerly a profession, but has since been made available to the public without needing to gain experience. Because of this lack of limitations, players are free to use any material they wish to construct buildings; a Novice lumberjack would be able to build an item using Amaranth logs or planks if they so desired and had the items to do so.

In order to build, a player must be equipped with a hammer, and must access the Building menu by holding [V]. Using [Q] and [E] (PC), they can scroll through the various build menus, including basic amenities such as the Campfire, crafting stations such as the Sawing bench and Campfire & spit, and transport items such as the Sled, Sled & chest, Rowboat, and Canoe (if playing as a Native). Players are also given access to the Structures and Category:Fortifications menu to build exterior items and outpost/fort structures, the House building menu to construct houses, and the various furnishing menus to decorate built houses.

To build an item, players must possess the appropriate amount of logs, planks, and other items necessary to build each item, must select the item in the Build menu, and must have their hammer out to build. Curiously, when crafting planks at a sawing bench, handsaws do not need to be in a player's inventory nor equipped; handsaws were formerly required to build houses in place of the hammer. House items, such as roofs, walls, pillars, and foundations, require a player to destroy them with an axe to return their planks; other items, such as decorations, will require the player to disassemble them to regain their crafting materials. If destroyed with items inside, storage containers, such as wooden crates, will drop their items in a storage remains bag.

The destruction of an item supporting another item, such as a table supporting a lighting item, a floor supporting a furnishing item, or even the foundation of a specific tile, will result in the destruction of whatever is being supported without the items being yielded back to the player. Players can use their hammer to restore the integrity of a piece of a house to prevent it from being destroyed, though players that are not the owner of a house cannot use an axe to cut through a foundation, floor, wall, or door.

Houses

Houses can be built by players outside of a safezone by constructing a Wooden foundation upon which the remainder of the house can be built. The house will be saved to a save slot, of which a player can possess three without the Enhanced House Building utility from the Game Store; each house can save up to a limit of 300 props, including the foundations, floors, walls, et cetera. Without the enhanced building utility, players can build a structure up to 5 by 5 tiles wide and 3.5 tiles high (including the foundation); constructing roofing will not be affected by the height restriction, though closing off the walls above the height limit can be problematic. Players without the enhanced building utility are able to expand their houses by a half tile by constructing Wooden foundation stairs on the side of a maximized border; any builds within this additional border will also be saved.

The house will automatically save items located in Storage containers, but will not save loose items such as Sleds and Sleds & chests. Houses can only be loaded and unloaded if the player is within a short range of the house; after loading, a player must wait three minutes (180 seconds) before being allowed to unload again to prevent spamming and creating lag. Furthermore, houses require mostly flat terrain in order to be built, and cannot be built underground, such as in caves.

In order to be considered a spawn point, houses must possess a bed, must be enclosed on all sides, must possess a roof, and must possess a front door. When all of these requirements are complete, the player is able to select their bed as a spawn point when respawning. The most basic form of this is known simply as a "spawn cabin".

Enhanced House Building

The Enhanced House Building utility costs 2000 Ducats, and can be purchased from the Utilities page of the Game Store. When purchased, the utility allows players to build the Wooden foundation (side) and Wooden foundation (corner), which (presumably)[1] allow players to build onto the side of a foundation that would otherwise be unable to be built due to the height of the foundation. Users are also given a higher props limit, house slots, a larger build radius, the ability to name houses, and the ability to save props on the exterior of a house, within its radius.

House Security

Being outside of safezones and with storage contents accessible by practically every player, ensuring a house's security should be of the utmost concern for any player that owns one. In order to ensure a house's security, players can link a Padlock key to a Padlock and apply the padlock to their front door; this forms a line of defense against any player without lockpicks that wishes to loot that house. However, the padlock can be defeated after some time, meaning the padlock alone does not mean a house is secure.

Of the storage furnishings that can be built, the Chest and Safe are the two that can provide some form of protection against potential thieves in a player's house. As with a door, a padlock can be placed on a chest to prevent its contents from being accessed save for the builder; the padlock must also be picked through for any thieves to gain access to the chest. The safe, though expensive, provides the maximum amount of security that can be given to a storage container, being unpickable and thus inaccessible to all but the owner.

Despite these precautions in protecting a player's items, it is still possible for a player to cannon through a house's walls or foundations in order to gain entry; as previously stated, the destruction of any supporting structure will destroy the items being supported by it and yield the items of any storage contents in bags of remains, including from chests and safes that sat within the destroyed tile.

Additionally note that leaving your house loaded and alone for some time, especially in remote areas, means it is more likely to be robbed of its possessions— players should be wary and should check in on their houses frequently if they remain loaded for an extended period of time.

Types of Buildings

In the Northwind meta, there are several different types of buildings that are frequently built by players, for ease of gameplay, roleplay, or for faction-based combat. These include:

  • Spawn cabins: A basic 1x1 tile enclosed cabin with a bed in it that serves as a spawn point for players.(Bannable)
  • Storage plots: Similar to the spawn cabin, but with mass storage space, such as available in crates; these are more often used for storage and utility purposes.
  • Bases: Similar to a manor (below), but focused vastly more on storage and utility. Often contains a vast quantity of weapons and appropriate items to allow players to fight, often seen on the Isle of Rupert with players fighting against the Saint Lawrence Company.
  • Battle towers: Similar to bases, but vastly disruptive in both aesthetic and accessibility. Players who build these towers are often part of a faction engaged in related business, such as fighting faction-to-faction conflicts.
  • Cabins: Houses, but smaller. Not as large, but more often seen and built because of aesthetics and personal preference.
  • Houses: The regular living space of a player, with a combination of storage, utility, and some luxury. Often a one or two story building.
  • Manors: A regular player's house at their build limit, or larger. A more than luxurious estate that combines levels of aesthetic beauty and utility.
  • Stores: Often built by players looking to roleplay, and often seen on the Beauval Isles. Player stores sell a variety of items, including weapons.
  • Restaurants: Similar to stores, but for the purpose of eating. Also often seen on the Beauval Isles.

These are unofficial designations from observations made on the player population.
